A stainless steel trough urinal is usually the best option where several users need access at once, wall space has to work hard, and the fixture has to survive constant use, heavy cleaning and the occasional impact.
That points straight at schools, sporting facilities, public amenities, transport facilities and industrial workplaces. It does not point at every project. User numbers, privacy, cleaning, flushing, drainage and room layout should all feed the decision. Our stainless steel urinals and cisterns range covers the configurations available.
When several users need access at once
The main advantage is continuous usable length. Instead of separate fixtures with dead space between them, a trough gives you a shared fixture running along the wall.
That suits places where demand arrives in bursts: before and after sporting events, during school breaks, at industrial shift changes.
Work out how many users need access during the busiest period and pick a length to match. Average daily use tells you very little about the short windows when the room is under pressure.
When durability matters
Stainless steel trough urinals suit public and unsupervised locations where fixtures cop rough treatment or deliberate damage.
Unlike brittle fixtures, stainless will not shatter or chip when it gets struck. It also gives you a practical surface for facilities dealing with constant moisture and frequent cleaning.
Common applications include:
- school and sporting amenities
- parks and public toilet blocks
- stadiums and recreation facilities
- factories and industrial changerooms
- transport and roadside facilities
- correctional and secure environments
Marko Stainless & Aluminium manufactures urinals from 304 Grade No.4 finish stainless steel, with 316 Grade available on request where more corrosion resistance is needed. When a custom length is needed
A trough urinal can be built around the wall you have, rather than forcing the layout around fixed individual units.
Marko Stainless & Aluminium offers:
- W621 wall-hung urinals from 600 to 6000 mm
- S621 slab urinals from 900 to 5500 mm
- D621 deluxe step urinals from 900 to 5500 mm
Custom lengths and site joins are available, and S621 and D621 corner arrangements can be made on request.
Long units still have to get to their position. Doorways, corridors and completed partitions often decide whether the urinal arrives in one piece or needs an agreed site join.
Wall-hung, slab or step configuration
The right configuration depends on the room, the cleaning approach, the hydraulic design and the architectural detailing.
A wall-hung trough suits projects where open floor beneath the fixture is preferred, which makes mopping easier. Slab and deluxe step urinals give you a different relationship between the wall, the floor and the user area.
Coordinate the selection with finished floors, wall construction, waterproofing, structural support and cleaning requirements before hydraulic rough-in and wall finishes are done.
Flushing, cistern and outlet positions
A trough urinal only works as part of a complete flushing and drainage arrangement. Confirm:
- flushing system and cistern requirements
- water-supply position
- outlet quantity, size and location
- maintenance access
- who supplies which plumbing components
Marko Stainless & Aluminium can provide cisterns to suit project requirements. Outlets can sit left, centre or right, with custom locations available.
Check the applicable WaterMark and WELS requirements for the complete fixture and flushing system you have selected. WaterMark certification is administered by the Australian Building Codes Board and is a requirement under the Plumbing Code of Australia for certain plumbing and drainage products. The hydraulic consultant or plumber should confirm supply, flushing performance and drainage before manufacture.
When individual urinals may be better
A trough is the wrong call where user numbers are low, individual separation matters, or the room is already set up around separate plumbing points.
Individual fixtures also let you take one unit out of service for maintenance or replacement without losing the whole run. In some architectural settings they suit the intended appearance and privacy layout better.
Compare whole-of-room performance rather than fixture purchase price on its own.
What to specify before ordering
Provide the model or preferred configuration, overall length, grade, outlet position, cistern and flushing details, wall and floor construction, fixing requirements and the delivery or installation scope.
Drawings should show corners, partitions, service access, finished floor levels and any proposed joins. On replacement work, check site dimensions and services rather than assuming the new fixture matches the existing one.
Frequently asked questions
Are trough urinals only used in schools?
No. They also suit sporting facilities, public amenities, industrial workplaces, transport facilities and other high-demand locations.
Can a stainless steel trough urinal be custom sized?
Yes. Marko Stainless & Aluminium manufactures custom lengths and can provide site joins and selected corner configurations where required.
Where can the waste outlet be positioned?
Depending on the model and the project, outlets can go left, centre or right, with custom positions available.
Does a trough urinal include the flushing system?
The scope varies. Cisterns can be provided to suit requirements, but the complete flushing, water-supply and drainage arrangement needs to be nominated.
Choosing the right urinal configuration
A stainless steel trough urinal is strongest where high simultaneous use, efficient use of wall space and durability are the priorities. Where privacy, low user numbers or separate servicing matter more, individual fixtures will serve you better.
Marko Stainless & Aluminium manufactures wall-hung, slab and deluxe step urinals from our Cardiff workshop for schools, builders, councils and commercial projects across Newcastle, the Hunter region and wider NSW.
